"Aviation Sand"

Hi community members, I am looking for FAA approved Sand to use as a teatment for ice conditions we may incounter on our Rwy. We are in S. Colorado and are having a difficult time finding vendors that sell materials that meet the specific FAA gradations. I am also considering NAAC, however I need to fully research the sand option before justifying the expense. Any thoughts or direction here is appreciated.  Thanks. G

Maintenance Manager Retiring

Hello MyOps!   My Airport Maintenance Manager is retiring and I was hoping to get some ideas regarding what to look for and pay attention to while we search for our next manager. I am new to my position and have limited maintenance experience so any insight would be very much appreciated.    We are a small hub international airport with very tough Winters and presently have no 3rd shift.

Front Brooms - Snow Removal

Anyone that uses front mount brooms for snow removal do you have problems with the wire and poly bristles breaking off?  It is a FOD issue for us.  Also our brooms are shedding full poly segments during snow removal operations.  Does anyone have thoughts on why this is occurring and how to remedy it? Thanks

Deice Chemicals on Runways - When to Apply Liquid vs Solid

Hello. Does anyone have a reference chart or guide to help their staff determine when to apply liquid and/or solid deice chemicals to runways? For example: If the forecast predicts freezing rain, and the temperature is (x), then apply liquid deice/anti-ice chemical (x) minutes prior to anticipated start of precipitation.  Currently, we use Potassium Acetate (Liquid) and Sodium Formate (Solid), sometimes with sand.  Thank you.

Reflective Light Markers

We are looking at adding reflective light markers to our runway edge lights to use during the snow season. Do any other airports use them? Do you have a brand you recommend?  I can't find any specific documentation from the FAA that says they cannot be used.

Communition platform Ops and Maintenance

Hello from JAX,   I was wondering what other airports are using for local communication between maintenance crews, custodial, and Operations?  Right now we are using a Push to Talk system that is failing miserably.  I love the concept of the PTT platform but a set of batman radios from Walmart would work better at this point.  We are leaning towards typical LOS radios, but there are some good and bad with those as well. ...

Fungicide for RWY Markings?

So we've got a bit of mildew/algae on some of our RWY markings, and we're 2-3 years out from a RWY rehab. As old as the markings are, I'd prefer to not use anything too abrasive (brushes, pressure washers, etc.) to clean them. So does anyone know of any fungicide that works well enough to remove algae just by spraying it on and hosing it off, or possibly just letting the rain wash it off?...

Traffic Pattern Indicator

Need to replace the translucent corrugated panels at our traffic pattern indicator. These panels are backlit for nighttime visibility.      Is there a FAA spec for these panels? I looked thru the ACs and couldn't find anything.

Road and Airfield Sweepers

Looking to see what types of Sweeper trucks everybody uses. Currently we operate Johnson VT600 and VT650. We are having issues with the main or center broom on the truck coning and wearing out within two weeks and the side or gutter brooms lasting about a Month. Our Inhouse Mechanic tells us both brooms should last at least a month. We are up for replacementr/rebid of equipment and looking for opinions. Thanks in advanced.

Engine Test Cells

Dear Operators, My airport has been approached about a possible business development play involving an "engine test cell" or test cell site for turbine engines. Does anyone have experience with this, or have a similar operation at your airport? I know this is a fairly vague question, but I confess that I am not familiar with such an operations aside from what a quick Google search has provided. I'm just looking for some information to...

Glass Beads

Should be a simple answer. The advisory circular is not very clear on the use of glass beads in the surface painted hold signs. Do you put glass beads in the red paint as well as the white paint or just the white paint? Some of our markings have both and some have just the white. We are trying to make everything consistent.

Restoration & Maint. of Historical Buildings

Good morning ladies and gents!  I have a good one for you all today.  We have several hangars and outbuildings that are listed in the historical registry.  As with many of these buildings they are not in the best condition and are in need of restoration and repairs in order to be suitable for business.  If anyone has experience working with vendors and contractors to bid and complete this type of work, I would love...

Paint Machine

Here at our airport we do our own striping. We are currently enhancing our RWY markings as required by our cert inspector and AC 150/5340. We have two machines both single color application, first is a large truck mounted unit that carrys two 55 gallon barrels and secondly small walk behind striper that carrys a 5gal bucket. Both have bead pots. Recently we purchased/tested a machine capable of painting two colors, it carrys to 15gal containers and two...

Liquid Runway Deicing Chemicals

We currently use E36 as our liquid deicing solution for the airfield and are looking at other cheaper chemicals. I was wondering what other airports use?   Our city uses a standard brine solution for the roadways and it is much cheaper then the E36. Would something like that be acceptable to use?    The FAA doesn't have a list of acceptable chemicals and only states the chemical has to meet SAE specifications.

Surface Painted Markings

Hello, Operations!   I've been attempting to sort through some issues with surface painted markings and it has been asked of me to reach out and see what information I can get on the subject. Primarily, the issue of beads has been a headache. We do our own painting and our striper is capable of painting an entire marking (marking + border + beads) in one sweep. The issue is that we are consistently getting...

New Airfield Lighting Megger Requirements

We just replaced out airfield lighting and I'm not impressed with the megger results.  A couple of the circuits are testing in the Gigohm range, but we have two that are measuring 118 and 47 ohms, respectively. FAA requires a minimum of 50 megohms but that's really low to what the ACE training literature calls for, which is about 500 megohms at a minimum. Also, the testing was done this month with no rain for...

OshKosh Brooms

Our airport has the opportunity to purchase a couple of used OshKosh 20 foot brooms that have around 19,000 miles on them. Does anyone have any thoughts about purchasing used airport equipment such as this? One opinion offered was that OshKosh makes a fine product, maybe the best for airports, and they indeed should be able to be used far beyond the 19,000 miles that these have on them.
