Airfield Condition Reporting Software

We're looking into going digital with our Airfield inspections, perimeters and maintenance requests and I was wondering what everyone else is using.  I've used ASOCS (GCR) in the past and my coworker found AirOps (Eagle) but I didn't know what else was out there.  Nothing too technical, just something to get away from having to keep up with 12 months worth of inspection sheets.  What's the ballpark cost on a software system similar to these? ...

Snow Removal Equipment

Just returned from the NW MTN Region annual meeting.  One subject that is discussed heavily and somewhat passionately each year is that of the difficulty many airports have dealing with manufacturers who constantly protest bid specs, unreasonably. We've been successful in overcoming that problem and several other airports are beginning to figure it out as well.  This isn't just about snow equipment, necessarily.  Brooms fall in there also.  Let me know if you know what I'm...

Water In Airfield Lighting Raceways

What type of water issues do other airports have with regards to the edgelight base cans, conduits and manhole/pull boxes? Our airport is in a relatively dry climate and we dont see much more than 17-24 inches of rain/snow in a year but I am finding alot of water in my base cans and larger manhole/pullboxes as I try to troubleshoot low meg readings from our crouse hinds megatracs. I am currently trying to trace...

Paint Machine Options

Does anyone have any suggestions on options for paint machines to spray airfield markings or does most everyone contract that out now?  We're looking for a machine, probably walk behind but would prefer riding, that would mainly be used on taxiway centerlines, hold shorts, etc.  Nothing runway related. Thanks for any suggestions!

Glass Beads on an Unlit Runway?

We're gearing up to paint our visual, unlit, Rwy 18-36 and the question arose as to whether or not we needed glass beads on the markings. To me, common sense dictates that you don't need them since you shouldn't be operating on that runway at night (being unlit).  But I also know that the people that make up the regs usually don't have large amounts of common sense.  Or it could just be that I'm...

EPA rule for runway deicing

Looks like in a few days (June 15), the EPA rule banning urea as a runway deicer goes into effect.  Here in Fort Smith, we've been fortunate enough to still use urea based on the fact that we use it so rarely (only 2 ops this past winter).  I use the word fortunate because we pay only for the amount we use through an agreement with the local farmers co-op.  With the coming changes, it...

Integrating Intelligence: Combating Terror in the Skies

IntroductionIn today's dynamic global world, where terror organizations of all types operate more like "Fortune 500" companies than rag-tag insurgents, traditional interdiction strategies no longer apply.  As both a prime target of and conduit for the "business of terror" the aviation industry has turned to adopting innovative approaches for ensuring the safety and security of passengers, crew and employees alike.  In response, a rapidly evolving new proactive model combining the resources of both government and...

Nuebert Aero Corp CFME friction tester

We have an aging KJ Law (Dynatest) CFME are looking into purchasing a tow behind CFME friction tester to lower our maintenance costs.  Our airport is in Texas and we will be using the unit to monitor rubber accumulation throughout the year and very rarely for winter operations.  Does anyone have the Nuebert Aero Corp friction tester and what do you think of the unit and the software?  Or does anyone have any other tow...

Surface Painted Hold Boxes

AC 150-5340-1K is very specific on the location and overall dimensions of the Boxes. However in our recent attempt to develop a Quick Reference Guide for Airfield Painting (Once finished I will share we designed it for ADG VI 747/800 but it can easily be tailored for who ever) we cant find verbiage that covers the stroke/width of the white painted numerals in the boxes. We know the height is 12' and can be reduced...

Overnight Snow Ops

We are an airport with a staff of 5 that perform of snow removal operations and we staff the airport M-F 8-5. Now that we are getting toward the end of snow season we are looking back at things we could possibly improve on. One thing that we are looking at is how we deal with weather through the overnight hours. As of now we watch the latest forcast and monitor the conditions throughout the...

Grass...to cut or to kill???

I was just curious as to what methods everyone uses to control the grass around the Twy/Rwy light pads.  Apparently, here at MLU, we like to spray herbicide to avoid having to mow around the lights.  I understand the concept, to save the cost of repairing all the lights that get damaged, but is that really the best way? I'm trying to decide how it should really be done.  Any thoughts?

Pilot Controlled lights

Recently our pilot controlled lights have not been functioning properly. You can turn them on with the regular 3,5 or 7 clicks. They will stay on for their alloted 15 minutes and then will shut off. Now heres the fun part. They will turn themselves back on approximately 3-10 minutes later. And they will constantly cycle on and off throughout the night untill we turn them off PCL. Has anyone had any kind of issues...

Construction Fencing

We in FSD are having a bit of a go around with the TSA regarding our construction fencing that crosses pavements. We have been using 8' chain link with posts supported by concrete filled tires. In the 14 years I've spent on airports, this has been the standard. I know some use concrete jersey barriers to support the fencing but does anyone have examples of other methods.

Deicing cleanup...how do YOU do it?

Deicing season is getting closer and we're operating out of a new terminal/ramp.  We have so few outbound operations in the mornings that we do not require any sort of deicing pad.  That being said, we currently do all of our deicing at the gate where there are several storm water drains.  The consultant that just rewrote our Storm Water Polution Prevention Plan suggested that we purchase HAZMAT drain covers ($300-700 each by the way) to...
