How well prepared is your airport?

Introduction We are all familiar with the images flashed across network television, Facebook and the Internet showing the recent devastations to hit the nation of Japan. Many have seen the video of Sendai airport awash in a sea of sludge, aircraft strewn about while passengers and employees alike, struggle to secure themselves on terminal rooftops while awaiting rescue. Despite the best efforts of planners and airport administrators, natural disasters have proven nearly impossible to predict.Worse yet,...

Outfit your airport's EOC for Free (almost)

Airport and airline administrators, supervisors and managers all know that as a result of "Murphy's Law" an aviation accident or incident involving their facility, equipment and personnel is nearly inevitable.  An effective response depends in a large degree to the adequacy and operational readiness of the airport emergency plan, the airport emergency operations center, and its mobile counterpart – the MCC (Mobile Command Center). As we all know, to be effective, regardless of airport size, traffic...

From Reactive to Proactive: the future of aviation security

From Reactive to Proactive: the future of aviation securityThe recent paradigm shift by terrorists from targeting passenger aircraft to cargo and freight airlines is hardly unexpected. As usual, the industry has responded with a media blitz of 'shock and awe', while pundits and 'experts' call for a complete overhaul of existing aviation security measures to 'deal with this new diabolical threat'. Standards and practices for commercial airlines of 100% cargo screening – developed in response...

Surface Painted Signs

New durable preformed thermoplastic markings are approved for surface painted signs.  The material can be applied to concrete or asphalt and can last up to 10x longer than standard traffic paint.  I know what a hassle these are to install so if your airport is one of many needing these, consider learning more about this FAA approved product (AC150/5370-10E).

Coyotes

Looking for ideas to discourage coyotes entering the airfield.  We keep the weeds down and block off all the holes they dig under the fence, yet they continue to come in.  We have contracted with US Fish and Wildlife a few times for trapping etc.  That knocks down the numbers for a while but they always come back and it isn't cheap. Anyone try any deterence measures?  Did it work?

Acquiring and Evaluating CBT Training in today's AVSEC Environment

Introduction In today's environment of ever increasing pressure for standardized regulatory compliance and continuously shrinking budgets, more and more, aviation administrators are turning to cost-effective computer based training to meet ever evolving needs. One need look no further than the Internet to find a host of programs and suppliers ranging from "employee security awareness" to  ground safety; and from aviation management, leadership to airport marketing and much more. Computer Based Training [and here we are...

Ops Vehicle Pictures

Hey everyone. I know there was a post about this some time ago, but I would like to resurrect it if I could. I am attempting to get an idea of what other airports are using for their operations vehicles to help me in designing our own. Exterior shots are just fine, but if you have any type of consoles, laptops, etc. inside the vehicle, that would be great to see as well. Thank you...

Is led lighting all that?

I just recently became an airport manager and our airport is in the process of getting new runway lighting.  I know that there is going to be a big discussion on led or not led.  We are located in Wisconsin so cold weather comes with the truff.  Any reconmendations?  Thanks Darrel

Lighting and Sign Numbering

We at King County International Airport (KCIA) are in the process of developing our light and sign inventorynumbering system. While we have the designed numbering system on a drawing, we need to physically number the fixtures in the field. I am looking for ideas on what works best? I have seen tags and engraving. The tags seem like they would become a FOD hazard? I would like to hear what other airports use and how it works. What is...

CMMS Helps Spokane Airport

CMMS Helps Spokane International Airport   Challenge:  Spokane International mainly had problems tracking maintenance information. The main concern in the maintenance department was tracking labor hours spent maintaining airport equipment. With square footage totaling over 700,000, which encompasses seven buildings and approximately ten acres of covered parking, energy conservation and reducing costs is crucial. Spokane International could not afford to over-maintain their equipment because the amount of square footage that Spokane International leases is...

Keeping the lines straight

Our Airport Maintenance Painters use a motorized cart but can't keep the edge of the lines straight.  Its easy to square up the ends with cardboard or roof shingles but the lateral edges are too long and they end up wavy and overtime begin to exceed the marking sizes.  For example my runway centerlines start to become 40 to 42 inches wide as opposed to the required 36 inches. Any suggestions.

John Deere Snow Removal

I work at a reliever airport in suburban Atlanta, and our general policy for ice and snow has been "it'll melt by tomorrow."  However, due to last week's storm, we are looking at possibly getting attachments for our John Deere tractors or for our Gator as a cheaper alternative to help on the rare occasion we need snow removal.  Our ops vehicle is small truck, so an attachment on that is probably a no-go.  Does...

Carrying a firearm on the airfield?

We have a permit from the Fish & Wildlife Service to allow for the take of migratory birds on our field to prevent damage or harm to aircraft or people.  My question is, what do I need to do or who do I talk to that can grant us permission to carry a firearm onto the airfield?  The TSA seems to think that it's a local LEO thing, but rather than blindly calling PD headquarters...

No Megger Reading

Highway lane reflectors on Airports

Hello Ops People.  My question to the forum is who else out there (airports) use highway lane reflectors on their taxiways and runways to designate centerlines and edge lines?  We do and I can not stand them nor do I think they should be permitted on airports that accomodate air carrier and air cargo traffic.  Does anyone else have problems with the heavies popping and snapping the reflectors in half creating a FOD issue?
