Part 139 Issues

Looking for photos of issues found during S/I (139.327)

Good afternoon,   My name is Buran, and I am a current Aviation Operations student. I am looking for someone to help me with the project. There are a lot of professionals here and I hope someone can help... If someone can share  pictures of any issues/discrepancies found during self-inspection, I would greatly appreciate it. I need to create a presentation but do not have whole a lot of photos.   Thanks is advance!!!   My...

Hangars

Let’s open up a big, fat can of worms.  We are in the process of rewriting our hangar storage agreements.  The current leases were basically dictated by tenants about 15 years ago and there have been many abuses going on ever since.  The biggest problems are non-aviation storage (cars, motorcycles, etc), unapproved and shoddily built modifications (lofts), and illegal sublets.   We have put together a pretty good document that addresses all these things but I...

Going Paperless

We're just starting a paperless work order system using a word doc that is stored in a shared drive with separate folders for pending and completed. Where and how did most of you make the switch and what recommendations or comments do you have on making the change? Also, we've been working with 2 iPads and so far have ForeFlight (for airfield driving), Flight Aware, Airport Zoom installed on them. Do you have any other...

The Role of Emergency Response Planning in SMS

Today as more and more aviation administrators make the transition from a traditional safety model to the organization-wide approach of Safety management Systems (SMS), developers should not overlook both the significance and role of the organization's Emergency Response Plan within the greater SMS framework. By definition, the Emergency Response Plan or (ERP) outlines in writing what actions should be taken following an accident and who is responsible for each action. The purpose of an ERP...

Disabled Aircraft Recovery

I was wondering what kind of equipment other airports are using to remove disabled aircraft. The example would be a blown tire on the runway. We have a couple of wheel dollies that we fabricated to place under the flat to allow you to tow the aircraft off the runway. Problems come up when the aircraft has a wheel fairing (wheel pants). We are currently working on fabricating a new dolly that allows for the fairing...

Safety Area and Aircraft Ops

Curious as to how other airports handle mowers, sweepers, maintenance crews, etc. in a safety area during aircraft ops.  We currently allow it, with ATC authorization, for any aircraft operation smaller than a turbo prop or a jet.  This is due to slower approach speeds and shorter wingspan, which in our minds, allows for a reduced safety area.  ATC policy only requires the controller to notify the pilot that there is a vehicle/personnel in the safety area.  If the...

Pilot Operated Lighting

Operations Gurus Trying to get a feel for how many comparatively sized airports use pilot operated lighting. We will be undertaking a lighting rehab project and want to know if other airports use this feature and find it beneficial. Does it save to not have lights burning all night? Does this raise any safety concerns? Is this even allowed under 139? We currently have pilot operated approach lighting (MALSR and RAIL) but would like to...

LED lighting issues? Icing?Output?

I am workiing with a company to address the icing issues that we have with LEDs on the airfield. We are looking at a cost effective solution rather then airport operators having to pay for heaters along with fixtures. Please comment and tell me any other issues that you have experienced with your LED conversion. We are hoping to present this solution at the Aviation Issues Conference in JAN aswell as fix any other issues...

Gate Usage Reports

I know this is not really a 139 issue, however, I was wondering if you could share your procedures at your airport for Gate Usage Reports. I am looking more towards unleased gates and charter reports, how you do keep track of everything? Do you have airlines self report or you audit them? I am trying to see you other airports do and see if I can improve our procedures. If you prefer to talk...

Signage and Lighting during construction/closures?

I have a question regarding signage during construction or closures.  Has anyone ever seen where it is required, or even recommended, to cover temporarily closed Twy and Rwy signs that border a movement area?  For example:  Let's say you have intersecting Rwys, e.g. 18/36 & 04/22.  If Rwy 18/36 is closed, is it required to cover the 18/36 mandatory signs located on Rwy 04/22 even if that Rwy is NOTAMed closed, the lighting circuit is...
