I know this subject has been beaten to death by everyone and we only have a few weeks left to have them completed. I would just like to share what I have learned over the event in having ours painted on by a contractor.
1. Make sure the contract fills in the stencil lines:

2. Make sure your beads reflect "RED" not "PINK" or "WHITE"

3. And with out really saying please make sure the read the right runway.
These are a few of the issues that I had to deal with, while having our signs installed. I have talked to my Certification Inspector and she informed me that this is an item that they "WILL" be inspecting during their visits.
I would love to hear anyone else stories about what to look for.

Surface painted signs - they can be quite a bear!
A few things to note:
- Labor intensive! Relatively speaking, lots of time for little square footage.
- Layout and surface preparation are 90% of the job - unless you want to do it again prematurely!
- Make sure material coverage rates are accurate; the red and white receive beads.
- If possible, allow at least 2 hours for red background to cure before white is applied.
- The marking(s) mimic the existing signage. When in doubt about character order, consult the sign.
- Vacuum up beads that have not adhered, they will be everywhere.
We have already started receiving calls from airports needing assistance because FAA inspectors have started writing them up for poor bead distribution, population, etc. If you're in a high-UV climate, don't be surprised when the waterborne red turns pink in a year - however they generally look red again at night becuase the UV only affects the top of the coating. There are alternate, durable solutions to waterborne.

We had ours done this year too.
Inspect them carefully- We're finding that the white is prematurely chipping, likely because the red underneath isn't cured, and that there is bead between the layers. We've had the contractor grind and replace failed markings more times this summer that we care to admit.
